Forecasting using a GARCH model typically requires specialized software or libraries that offer GARCH modeling capabilities. While SQL itself does not have built-in functions for GARCH modeling, you can use SQL in combination with external tools or libraries that support GARCH modeling.
Here’s an example of how you can use SQL to prepare the data and call a GARCH model from Python using the arch library:
- Export the BTC price and timestamp data from the SQL table into a CSV file, let’s call it
btc_prices.csv. The file should have two columns:timestampandprice. - Write a Python script that uses the
archlibrary to load the BTC price data, fit a GARCH model, and forecast the BTC price 1 hour ahead. Here’s an example:
import pandas as pd
from arch import arch_model
# Read the BTC price data from the CSV file
btc_prices = pd.read_csv('btc_prices.csv')
# Convert the timestamp column to datetime
btc_prices['timestamp'] = pd.to_datetime(btc_prices['timestamp'])
# Sort the data by timestamp
btc_prices = btc_prices.sort_values('timestamp')
# Calculate log returns
btc_prices['log_returns'] = np.log(btc_prices['price']).diff()
# Fit the GARCH(1, 1) model
model = arch_model(btc_prices['log_returns'].dropna(), vol='Garch', p=1, q=1)
model_fit = model.fit()
# Forecast the volatility 1 step (1 hour) ahead
forecast = model_fit.forecast(start=len(btc_prices), horizon=1)
# Get the forecasted volatility
forecasted_volatility = forecast.variance.iloc[-1]
# Convert volatility to BTC price forecast
last_price = btc_prices['price'].iloc[-1]
forecasted_price = last_price * np.exp(np.sqrt(forecasted_volatility))
# Print the forecasted price
print(forecasted_price)
- Run the Python script, and it will output the forecasted BTC price 1 hour after the available data.
Please note that this approach assumes you have Python installed with the arch library, which provides GARCH modeling capabilities. Ensure that you have the necessary dependencies installed (arch, numpy, pandas, etc.) before running the script. Additionally, GARCH models require sufficient historical data to estimate the model parameters accurately, so make sure you have an adequate amount of BTC price data available for reliable forecasting.
